Itinerary for BarbersHill
June 9-12 2003


Monday June 9th,2003

01:58pm:  Projected time of arrival of Barbershill group from St. Louis, MO layover from Houston, TX.

02:10pm:  After Daniel greets and meets everyone and bags are received, group departs to the city via coach bus. Here on the bus there will be a general tour and a gourmet wrap (provided by It’s A Wrap) given to curb hunger.  

03:00pm:  Arrival to hotel (the Edison located on 47th between 8th Avenue and Broadway.

03:30pm:  Unload those bags and get set to explore the Cross Roads of the World!!!

*04:00pm:  We will head into Times Square and briefly learn of its history and its bright surroundings. Learning how 42nd St. has cleaned up, we will then be entered into a magical museum of familiar figures that look so real that you can tell your friends you saw Whoopi, Brad Pitt, and Elvis. Oh yeah , the King is dead. Then again!  

05:30pm:  We will head up 8th Avenue and show you how this area has changed and we will make a pit stop to get your NY knick-knacks at Mr. Lees’ hole in the wall gift shop. At half the price of other stores, you can get all those souvenirs for friends and family and have more $$ for yourself. We will We will quickly head back to the hotel and drop any shopping bags that you have acquired and change quickly for an evening of gourmet delicacies and architectural gems.

*7:15pm: We will head East on 42nd St. via the metro bus and pass the NY Public Library as well as Grand Central Terminal (which we will see later), and get off at 2nd Avenue to Cibo, a Mediterranean masterpiece of delicious selections to choose from.  

8:45pm: Being comfortably full, we will head over to Grand Central Terminal for a brief tour of this opulent and palatial superstructure. Some of the highlights will include, a private apartment, the whispering well, and the grand cosmic ceiling.

9:00pm:  Taking the subway down underneath the busy NY City streets we will ride across town back to Times Square and transfer to the N or R downtown train to one stop, Herald Square.

9:20pm: Here we find the home of the largest department stores in the world, Macy’s and the most famous skyscraper in the world, the Empire State Building. On to the tower with those unforgettable views .where Daniel will show the group the sights and give a geographical view of where the students are and where we’ll be heading in the next few days.

10:00pm:  We will head west to see the outside of Madison Square Garden and head uptown on the 1/9 train to Times Square for Picture Yourself on Broadway: where we will receive an awesome group picture of all of us under the bright lights of the big city with professional camera man Kevin McCormick.

10:30pm:  If time permits, we will go back in time to when girls wore poodle skirts, and guys slicked their hair back. Be sung to by singing waiters and sip on milkshakes and malts. ($$ On your own) We will head back to the hotel. After a long day of travel and walking, the group will settle down for a good nights’ sleep.  


Tuesday June 10th

*7:00am:  Rise and Shine! The group will meet Daniel in the lobby where we will quickly grab breakfast at the recognized Café Edison.  

7:45am:  Off to the Ferry. After breakfast we will zoom down to lower Manhattan where we will see the dramatic changes of Ground Zero (before the crowds gather). We will then take a quick tour of the Financial Capitol of the World, Wall St. Continuing down Broadway, we will make our way past the Bull and through Battery Park to the Ferry where we will view the beautiful Statue of Liberty. (To save precious time, we will not get off the ferry at the Statue)

*11:00am: We will then ferry over to Ellis Island where we will begin the exploration of the Immigrant Experience. Daniel will give a brief overview of the immigrant’s adventure through this Island that brought tears of joy and sadness to over 12 million people. Rene then will have the group go on an exploration scavenger hunt finding out the interesting information about the experiences this varied and vast of people went through.  

1:30pm: Grabbing a snack on the ferry, we will then make our way to the metro bus in Battery Park and make our way to Chinatown.

*2:00pm:  Getting off the bus/subway we will partake of will partake in one of the most popular Dim Sum palaces, Jing Fung. Then it will be time for some good ole bargain shopping where you can haggle over prices for souvenirs, bags, and jewelry. Maybe stop by for some homemade ice cream at the notorious Ice-cream Factory. If there is time, we can walk through Little Italy and experience the ambience of what was once an Italian enclave. We will continue North to SoHo (South of Houston) and learn about this trendy neighborhood.  

*4:00pm: The students will take time warp into the past of how the other half lived. The Lower East Side Tenement Museum, one of New York’s most popular museums tour of an actual tenement that has been the home of to over 7,000 people from over 20 nations. You will meet a teenage Italian Jewish girl in the year 1916 and see what life was like for an immigrant.

5:30pm:  We will eat grub @ one of the oldest delis in the city– Katz’ Deli - where the roast beef and pastrami are carved off by hand in front of your very eyes.. We will take a visit to specialty stores like Tribal Soundz and Galleria J. Antonio, see Thompkins Square Park, as well as maybe see the ghost of Peter Stuyvesant, Netherlands’s third Dutch Governor, and one of the oldest pubs in the city, McSorley’s where we will be entertained by some highly rhythmic and ambidextrous blue men.

*8:00pm: Enjoy the Off- Broadway production of Blue Man Group!

9:30pm:  We will head west in to the West Village and see where Bob Dylan got his start, receive a real NY massage (coupon provided for a discount) eat some real NY cheesecake (on your own) and Head back for a nights rest



Wednesday June 11th

08:00am:  Meet Daniel in lobby.

*08:15am:  Breakfast at Planet Hollywood, the home of movie magic.  

09:00am: Daniel will escort you over through the Diamond District where millions of dollars of transactions take place every day to 5th Avenue the dividing avenue of the east side and west side of Manhattan where we will take in the largest Catholic Cathedral in the United States (St. Patrick’s), Rockefeller Center, and go on the back stage tour of tone of the largest theaters in the world, Radio City Music Hall. Time can also be used to see and shop at the NBC Experience Store as well as the only official store of New York’s Bravest, the FDNY Firezone.  

11:00am: Radiocity Music Hall Backstage Tour (Reservation # 11-39515)

*12:15pm:  Time for the slice of your life, NY pizza that is. John’s Pizzeria is as authentic as it gets. You will much away to your hearts content in style and what was once a church sanctuary.  

*1:50pm:  After our bellies are full, we will come and meet those dancing feet in the Broadway musical comedy that won the 2002 Tony award for best Broadway Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie.  

4:00pm:  Go back to the hotel for sometime to relax or change for the night’s festivities.

*4:45pm:  Meet in the lobby, we will go to Lundy’s Seafood for some succulent sole, savory crab cakes, or mouth watering prime rib.  

*6:15pm: The group will depart ways as 17 will go to see a magical talking candlestick and walking furniture help a damsel in distress and a grumpy Beast fall in love (The show does not begin till 8 pm and so Renee and the theatre group will have time for shopping @ Macy’s on their own.). Daniel will escort the remaining 16 to the Bronx to see the Yankees play the Houston Oilers at Yankee Stadium.

10:00pm:  Head over to the View for dancing above the stars!!!! (Coupon hopefully will be provided for free cover charge depending on vendor and drinks are on your own)

11:30pm:  Nighty Night!  



Thursday June 12th

*07:15am:  Meet Daniel in the lobby with luggage ready to go on coach bus.

*07:30am:  Popover-to-Popover Café for America’s only bread, the popover. Accompanied with eggs, bacon, sausage, and delicious strawberry butter we will have a fast paced breakfast on your feet (limited seating).
08:15am:  Heading north west via coach bus, we will tour the “You Got Mail” area known to most New Yorkers as the Upper West Side. Stops may include Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts, Tavern on the Green, H& H bagels, and a real gourmet market Zabars. We will also enter the 843 acre man made park, Central Park. Stops include the merry-go round, the Dairy, Literary Walk, Bethesda Terrace, The Rambles, Belvedere Castle, Shakespeare Garden, and the Swedish Cottage.  

11:00am Arriving at the Museum of Natural History at 81st st. and Central Park West, we will be picked up by coach bus and we will check out Zabars and H&H. Going northbound to Morningside Heights and Harlem on Broadway, stops may include Columbia University, Seinfeld’s hangout Tom’s Diner, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Riverside Church, and the Apollo Theater.

*11:45pm:  Stop in Harlem for some great soul food at Sylvia’s!

*12:45pm: As we pass numerous museums along 5th avenue known as Museum Mile, we will stop at the largest of them all, the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Holding over 5 million pieces of artwork from American to Egyptian, one can be overwhelmed at all there is to see. We will only have a short period of time, so Daniel will explore the museum giving some of its highlights.  

*2:40pm: Meet back at the bus for a departure to LaGuardia Airport.  

3:40pm: Arrive at LaGuardia, unload, and prepare for the flight home at 4:46 pm.
